This is us: Nina & Michael

"Let's move to Bornholm," I said to my husband Michael on our last day of vacation on Bornholm in the summer of 2017. Today, I'm not sure how serious I actually was back then. Michael immediately responded positively to the idea (perhaps because he'd always wanted to live near a serious body of water), and it ignited an energy in both of us that led us to actually set off for Bornholm two years later, in the summer of 2019.

When our daughter Elena was born, we both increasingly desired a simple, nature-oriented life. We wanted more family time and, above all, for our children to grow up in a free, carefree environment surrounded by nature. And we wanted to create a place where we could live and work. Twelve days after our son Luca was born, we emigrated to Bornholm.

These are Elena & Luca!

We had lived in the center of Berlin for several years.

Michael is a doctor, psychotherapist, and organizational developer and has supported companies around the world in their change processes. I headed a foundation for seven years with the goal of eliminating child poverty in Germany and providing all children with fair educational opportunities. We both traveled extensively for work.

Today we live on Tyskegård, a four-sided farm with a sea view, surrounded by a 2-hectare wildflower meadow. We have four cats and 17 chickens living with us. We would also like to have sheep and dogs. We have planted a vegetable garden and converted the former pigpen into a large greenhouse with an event kitchen and a large stone oven, so that we can gradually become more self-sufficient. Furthermore, by building three apartments and a small holiday home in the existing farm buildings, we have created an opportunity for visitors to experience Tyskegaard. Not just as vacationers, but also as participants in the various seminars we offer here throughout the year.

Our family life here on Bornholm feels much freer. This is partly due to the amount of space available to us and the vastness surrounding Tyskegård. Our nearest neighbor lives 500 meters away. Our children, Elena and Luca, go to a nature kindergarten and are out in the forest or by the sea every day, whatever the weather. Furthermore, the Danes' mentality is very relaxed and unpretentious. And we were very impressed by the Danish education system, which is primarily about developing potential. It's no surprise to us that surveys consistently rank Danes among the happiest people in comparison to other nations.

We consider it a great gift to have the sea in front of us every day. And it's true: the color of the sea is a little different every day. And thanks to Tyskegård's location, the light is particularly special in the mornings and evenings. We've been privileged to witness countless breathtaking sunrises and sunsets here. In the summer, we love riding our bikes down the hill to the small fishing village of Aarsdale in the morning and jumping into the sea first thing. We usually meet a few Aarsdale residents in the harbor, philosophizing about God and the world over their morning coffee.

Tyskegård has now become our home, and we can't imagine a more beautiful place to call home for our family! For us, Bornholm, with its breathtaking nature, incredible abundance, and relaxed islanders, is a perfect place to live with children.
